What I Love

(originally printed in the February edition of The Family Magazine)

What I Love.

I’ve always wanted to do a giveaway like Oprah; one where I give my friends my favorite things. But, what if they didn’t love those things like I do?

A few months ago I mentioned to one of the girls I was working with that I loved this new portable clothing rack. I thought it was ingenious. It is lightweight, holds a ton of clothes, is about 1-2ft. longer than traditional racks and is portable. Well, she didn’t love it so much. Her comment was “I hate it”. For a moment, I felt like I was punched in the gut. I mean, why would you insult my very favorite fantastic business tool? Sigh…

When you find something great, do you let everyone know about it? There seem to be so many choices for everything out there, at times I think we get tired of trying to find the ‘best’ and settle for ‘ok’. There are some things I think everyone should know about. Simply put – my favorite things. Stuff I never travel without, things I took with me when we lived in Russia and thing that I simply cannot live without.

WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD WITHOUT

Ugg and/or Emu Slippers
I have different ones for different seasons. And if you’ve ever owned a pair you know what happens to them as they get old…well, they take on an odoriferous life of their own. I will tell you, there is something very comforting to coming home after a long day and putting on a pair of very cozy slippers.(added note: Locally, I find these at Verandah)

Cartise Jeans
Who knew. I mean really WHO KNEW? I have always had an affinity for premium denim, and I am always in the market for the perfect jean that makes me look skinny on a fat day. Not only do I love these jeans for the fit (comfortable rise, with contoured waist band), but they have a great funky style that I have only seen in jeans that were NOT made for women over 40.(added note: I find these jeans locally at Flourish Boutique)

The basic Cami
I am a camisole junky. I love to layer a cami under everything I wear. There are a few reasons for this: warmth in the winter, to preserve nice blouses and sweaters (so I don’t have to launder them every time I wear them), and the most important…they have a slimming / smoothing effect! I am a little embarrassed to say how many camis I have! (added note: want my fave? Message me for more info)

Beauty Products
I have been a beauty product junkie for a long time, but I have paired down the good, bad and (makes me) ugly to come to the conclusion I cannot live without these 3 things:

Blinc Mascara. I have very sensitive eyes and tent to be allergic to a lot of things – especially mascara. This is a unique kind of mascara that builds tubes around each eyelash rather than painting your eyelashes. No flaking, no smudges – LOVE! (added note: locally, I get this mascara at Camellia)

Mineral Veil by Bare Escentuals – As my skin has aged, it seems that powder has become problematic. This “powder” isn’t powder – it is great for sensitive skin, and honestly, makes your skin look flawless! (adde

Aveda Volumizing Tonic – I’ve used this for years, and when I don’t…my hair looks like something that could be compared with a drowned rat. It adds weightless volume - which is a fancy way to say umph to your ‘do’!

Chanel lip gloss – I will agree, that my first Chanel lipstick purchase was an extravagance (can you say Merry Christmas to me?), but honestly I have never loved anything as much as Chanel’s lip gloss! It actually stays on my lips and doesn’t wander to my teeth! Try #55 Confidence…you will love it!

IPod and Audio Books
One of my New Year’s resolutions last year was to read more. There are a few people I aspire to be more like, and the one thing I notice that they all have in common is that they read. A lot. So – I too was going to read. A lot.

But here is where my great reading plan got foiled. When I sit to read, my brain won’t shut off so I can enjoy what I am reading. That coupled with the reality if I have time to sit and read, I should be doing a load of laundry or something.

[cue audio book triumph music]

Then I found the beauty of audio books. I have loaded DOZENS of books on my IPod and I listen to them when I drive. If you are having trouble finding time to escape – try audio books, I promise you will be glad you did!

Poetic License
Speaking of literature, have you heard of Poetic License shoes? I really hesitate telling all of you my little shoe secret here…I kinda like having unique shoes that not a lot of people own. Well, the cat is out of the bag! POETIC LICENSE shoes are very comfortable and very sassy – my 2 criteria for shoes. (added note: I purchase this brand of shoe locally from Flourish and Verandah)

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS!?
I would love to hear what your favorite things are, let me know!  I am always looking for new favorite things...
