Good question...and I don't know. I've only met a few clothing designers. Clothing designers do keep an eye on what is happening in the accessory market to be sure their styles are going to mesh with what the marketplace is supplying. In some of the runway shows I've seen, designers don't like to show real fancy shoes with their clothing - it distracts from the line of their pieces.
If you've ever seen a designer - generally they are fairly simply attired people - they have a uniform that you always see them in. Betsy Johnson is one of the notable exceptions to this...but if you've ever seen the icon Ralph Lauren, he is always dressed the same.
